Skulls. A piece of Einstein’s brain. A model of conjoined twins. Even a desiccated colon. These are all part of the collection displayed at the Mutter Museum in Philadelphia, whose mission is to tell the story of medicine through the lives of individuals, the conditions they faced, and the tools and therapies developed to treat them; the exhibitions illustrate how far the practice of medicine has progressed, along with how some things remain the same, such as vaccine uncertainty and pandemics. Affiliated with the College of Physicians of Philadelphia, the institution recently made their display of rare and valuable books available to the public. And if you’re located in the area, consider attending the “Doctor’s Lounge,” a new, free, in-person quarterly series that features conversations between prominent physicians about topical issues; the next event occurs next month on the evening of September 15, “Do No Harm: Defending the Physician’s Duty in Skeptical Times.”
