Equity and access challenges in healthcare often occur for geographic reasons, such as lack of proximity to hospitals in rural regions, or lack of resources in underserved neighborhoods. But in the case of COVID-19, inequitable access can be the result of geopolitics. In Florida–the only state not to have pre-ordered vaccines for the under 5 age group–pediatrician Lisa Gwynn MD was admonished by government officials and stripped of a board position after she advocated for COVID-19 vaccination for children under age 5.
