Neuroscientists have recently probed into the phenomenon known as “near-death experiences,” which are practically impossible to describe in a lab. The new approach leading to new insights? Studying individuals who have purportedly undergone such experiences—and, who have also had some encounter with psychedelic drugs. While the descriptions are distinct, the overlapping adjectives are prompting some researchers to ask: Can the science of subconciousness be illuminated by a better understanding of non-ordinary states?
