Watered-down pee? Straight-up pee? Compost pee? All of the above, claims one organic gardening publication, citing studies conducted in Sweden showing that one adult’s urine contains enough nutrients to fertilize 50-100% of the crops needed to feed one adult—meaning that human urine can be kept in the local food cycle rather than going down the toilet while we import nutrients from elsewhere. (But mind the salt content, scientists say; and make sure no fecal material is present.) Possibly useful for city environments, where—due to lack of green spaces–other local forms of fertility may be scarce?
